My Favourite Face SPFs

Face SPF cream Feature Image

Hi everyone. I have not always been good with SPF. I spent my teenage years trying to get a tan and would wear little if any SPF to try and get a tanned glow to my skin. Looking back, the funny thing is I have fair to medium skin and never actually tanned that well anyway, use to just burn because I wasn’t wearing the correct level of sun cream for my skin. This would lead to days of pain and discomfort after which the little bit of glow would have vanished!

Moving forward many years, I now wear SPF on my face every day. If I am in the house or maybe nipping out into the garden briefly I will wear a moisturiser containing a high SPF but otherwise, I will wear SPF on top of my moisturiser. I started applying SPF daily a couple of years back when I started using retinol. If you are using retinol, retinoid, or tretinoin products you MUST wear SPF every day. These types of products pull oil and dry skin cells away from the skin and can make your skin more sensitive to sun rays as the new skin can burn easily. Also, retinoids break down in sunlight, making them less effective and which is why they are bottled in opaque bottles. The two main rays that damage our skin are UVA & UVB. The most common are UVB rays which are responsible for sunburn. They can also cause skin cancer, moles and melanoma on the skin. UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper and are one of the main causes of premature skin aging, fine lines, and wrinkles. They can also lead to cancer formation. Sunscreen products will help protect your skin from these rays.

I have never liked the feel of traditional SPF cream on my face. It feels heavy and greasy and makeup won’t sit over it. So, I have been researching face SPFs to see which I found the best. I looked at how it applied, how it felt afterward, how foundation applied on top, and finally the smell as lots of sunscreens have a strong chemical smell that I cannot stand. Enjoy my review…

Mimitika Face Sunscreen SPF50

£17.50 for 50ml from Feelunique Mimtika SPF 50 Cream

I got this as a sample in a Birchbox. I had not heard of the brand before. It is a rich creamy sunscreen that sinks into the skin. It smells lovely. It does not feel like a sunscreen at all, more like a rich face cream. I apply this after my serums and do not need to use a moisturiser as it is nourishing and hydrating. I allow it 5 minutes or so to fully absorb and then my makeup applies over the top no problem. Even with a face primer makeup sits well on the skin. This is great for someone with dry skin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra Light Facial Sun Cream SPF50

£17.50 for 50ml from Feelunique La Roche Possay SPF50 Fluid

When I started my search for a face SPF this was the one that the beauty industry was raving about. It is a lightweight white liquid that is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin. It is resistant to water, sweat, and sand. To apply you shake the bottle up and then massage into the face. It is non-greasy and does not leave any marks. It feels great on the skin and absorbs well. Makeup and primer apply well on top. I actually find this sun cream a bit drying so apply it over my moisturiser and it is fine then. It is perfect for people with oily/combination skin. It has a matte finish and does not go oily through the day. It is one of my favourite face sun creams and I can see why it has so many good reviews. The only thing I don’t like is the bottle is very small, which is great to keep in your handbag but works out quite expensive for the amount you get.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Face Mist SPF50+

£14.00 for 75ml from Feelunique La Roche Possay SPF Spray Mist

This is a spray version of the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra Light Facial Sun Cream and I love this one too.  It is a dry invisible spray that is water-resistant and suitable for sensitive skin. It is excellent as the spray is so fine it does not affect your makeup at all.  I apply the fluid first thing in the morning and then use this throughout the day to top up my SPF. I have included this in my May favourites as I am using it all the time. This has a matte finish and is non-oily so again would be suitable for oily /combination skin or used over a moisturiser for drier skin.

The Body Shop Skin Defence Multi-Protection Face Mist SPF 30

£18.00 for 60ml from The Body Shop   The Body Shop Skin Defense SPF30

This is a lightweight face mist that protects the face without leaving it sticky or greasy. It claims to help brighten the skin for a more radiant appearance. It is suitable for all skin types and 100% vegan. This is a very popular product that is often sold out due to its popularity. I bought this hoping I was going to like it, however, it really stings my face and lips. I have tried it a few times now and can’t stand it. I have to rub it straight off. It has quite a strong chemical smell too which I am not keen on. I am currently going through a bit of a journey at the moment with my skin following the use of tretinoin and muy skin is extremely sensitive and sore which is why I may be struggling with this, or I may be allergic to an ingredient. If you read the reviews though, lots of people love this, just not suitable for me, unfortunately. However, my husband loves it.

NIVEA SUN UV Face SPF Q10 Anti-Age & Anti-Pigments

£7.99 for 50ml from Superdrug   Nivea Q10 SPF cream

This is a moisturising face sun cream formulated with Q10 to help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation. It is a light silky cream that absorbs well into my skin and leaves it feeling really hydrated and moisturised. I do not need to apply my moisturiser with this cream. It does not feel like sun cream at all and leaves no marks or residue. I actually bought this because as much as I love the La Roche-Posay fluid, it is very expensive to apply every day and I wanted to try a cheaper brand to see how effective it was for a day to day basis.

I really like this cream and use it most days to work or if I am just pottering around the garden. It has a pleasant smell and applies lovely. Makeup sits well over the top. It really does just feel like a moisturiser. It is good for drier skin. I particularly like that it has Q10 ingredients to help anti-aging and I think it is great that there is a factor 30 and 50 available. This sun cream is really effective and excellent value. I top up through the day with the La Roche-Posay spray. I am tempted to put it at the top of my favourite list! It is suitable for dry/combination skin.

I hope you enjoyed my post.
